For more than 40 years, Amigos de las Americas has
conducted programs that send teens and young adults--mostly
high school and college students--on service projects in many
countries of Latin America.
Every year a select group of volunteers spends six to eight weeks in a
host country, working on projects that advance public health, build
youth leadership and advance intra-American friendship.
Countries where volunteers live and work include Costa Rica, the
Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Uruguay and
Paraguay.
The New York City Chapter traditionally selects 20 - 30 volunteers per year. In most years, roughly half are high school students; half are college students. The high school volunteers come from New York City, other parts of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
To prepare volunteers for their Latin America experiences, the New York
City Chapter conducts training from December
- May. This year, training will take place at 4 three
hour session on Sunday afternoons-- in December, January,
March and May--and and two overnight retreats (Saturday - Sunday), in
February and April. (You can see the exact training dates at the
Calendar link above.)
Training prepares volunteers in Spanish conversation,
cross-cultutral sensitivity, networking, technical skills, personal
health & safety, and the culture of Latin America. In June, our
chapter volunteers travel to their assigned countries. Once in country,
they join with volunteers from other chapters throughout the United
States. Volunteers are then placed with a partner, in rural or
semi-rural communities to live with families for the summer.
Life-long friendships have been built between AMIGOS volunteers and
their adopted communities, and between Amigos volunteers and their
Amigos partners. Spanish language skills develop toward
native fluency. And thousands of young people have learned
invaluable lessons about cultural differences, community service, and
their own ability to lead.
